Greenville Council of Garden Clubs' Spring Garden Tour
HARMONY...Something for Everyone
Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, 2013 ~ 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Looking for inspiration and great ideas for your gardens? Come and enjoy the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs' Annual Spring Garden Tour. It is open to the public Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., both days! Imaginations will be stirred with landscape designs focusing on nature's beauty. These garden owners have established garden areas but have the added dimension of entertainment areas, perfect for hosting large parties or simply enjoying quiet evenings. 

This year our six spectacular gardens are located in the Simpsonville area and promise to be a delightful surprise for all, especially those who appreciate delicious food! Five outdoor kitchens are featured along with local chefs serving up tasty samples in each. Stroll through colorful country gardens, an in-town Bed & Breakfast,  a historic country farm, an incredible landscape nursery and much more. A light lunch will be available at Timberock at Hopkins Farm. Unique garden and kitchen items...plus plants will be for sale at various locations. This year the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs Garden Tour truly will have gardens in HARMONY...Something for Everyone!

2013 Greenville Council of Garden Clubs Tour Directions

Directions to the gardens from downtown Greenville all begin at the intersection of Academy / Williams St. and E.North  St. (which becomes I-385), a few blocks from GCGC Headquarters at the beautiful Kilgore-Lewis House & Arboretum.  Directions are given from Greenville to each garden. 

Look for GCGC Tour signs marking each Tour Site.

 

Interlocking directions are given in two groups:  the Upper Group of Gardens — Gardens 1 and 3 (A and C in your Tour Day Brochure) and the Lower Group of Gardens-- Gardens 4, 5, 6 (D, E, F).  Coming directly from Greenville these five gardens may be reached most easily via I-385. 

            Garden 2 (B in your Tour Day Brochure)-430 Log Shoals Rd. - is most easily accessed via Laurens Rd and may be visited on the way to the Lower Group.  

 

Garden 2 (B)—The Thomasson Garden, "Petra"- 430 Log Shoals Road, Greenville, SC 29607

From Greenville:  Travel away from Downtown on E. North St. for 0.2 mile.  Take Exit 42- B toward US 276-Laurens Rd.  Turn right on Laurens Rd.  Travel 7.3 miles on Laurens Rd (becomes Main St in Mauldin).  Cross Butler Rd.  At the traffic light in front of Mauldin 1st Baptist, turn right on Owens Lane.  Immediately turn left on New Neely Ferry Rd in front of a shopping center.  Go almost a mile on New Neely Ferry Rd before turning right on Log Shoals Rd.  Greenbrier Elem. is on this road.  Travel 2 miles on Log Shoals Road.   430 Log Shoals Rd is on your left. 

Thomasson Garden to Timberock at Hopkins Farm - 3717 Fork Shoals Rd.  Continue traveling southwest on Log Shoals Road for 2.2 miles.  Turn left onto Fork Shoals Rd./SC-146.  From there, travel 5.1 miles to Timberock at Hopkins Farm - 3717 Fork Shoals Rd.

 

UPPER GROUP:

Garden 1 (A)—The Ferguson-Frady Garden - 3 Tolland Court, Simpsonville SC 29681

            From Greenville:  Travel away from Downtown on E. North St. for 0.2 miles until it becomes I-385 South toward Columbia. Continue on I-385 for 10.5 miles.  Take Exit 31/ I-185 Toll toward Atlanta.  You will not actually get on the I-185 Tollway, but will take Exit 31-A / SC Hwy 417.  At the end of the 31-A exit ramp, turn left onto SC Hwy 417/NE Main St.  Travel 1 mile.  Turn left onto SC-14.  After 0.4 mile, take the 2nd right (1st right is Stokes Rd.) onto Alcott Ct.  The first street to the right will be Tolland Ct. 

Ferguson-Frady Garden to Garden 3 (C) - The Garden House B & B - 302 S. Main St., Simpsonville SC.  Retrace your steps to SC-14 and on SC-14 to SC - 417/ NE Main St.  Turn left on 417 /NE Main.  Go 2.6 miles. After you cross Curtis Street, turn right across the RR track onto W. Trade Street.  Take the first left onto South Main St. 302 S. Main St. will be on your right.

 

Garden 3 (C)—The Garden House B & B - Roy and Frances Shelton - 302 S. Main St., Simpsonville

            From Greenville:  Travel away from Downtown on E. North St./ I-385 toward Columbia.  Continue on I-385 for 13 miles.  Take Exit 29 / Georgia Rd toward Simpsonville for 0.4 miles.  Turn left on W. Georgia Rd./ SC 272.  Continue to follow this for 0.9 miles.  W. Georgia Road becomes N. Maple Street.   Almost immediately, turn left onto W. Curtis Street.   Take the first right onto S. Main.  After you cross Trade Street, The Garden House B & B - 302 S. Main will be on your right.

 

 

Links between UPPER GROUP and LOWER GROUP of Gardens:  Retrace your steps from 302 S. Main to West Georgia Rd. To go to Garden 4 (D) The Bragg Garden, get back on I-385 South until you reach Exit 27-Fairview Road to Simpsonville.       

            Follow directions below to Garden 4 (D), starting with **. 

            To go to Garden 5 (E)-Timberock at Hopkins Farm, cross I-385 and continue on W. Georgia Rd. 4.9 miles; turn left on Fork Shoals.  Travel south 3.0 miles to Timberock at Hopkins Farm.

 

LOWER GROUP:

Garden 4 (D)—Brenda and Terry Bragg - 121 Fox Trace-Simpsonville, 29680

            From Greenville:  Travel away from Downtown on E. North St./ I-385 toward Columbia.

Continue on I-385 for 14.8 miles to Exit 27-Fairview Road to Simpsonville. ** At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto Fairview Road / SC-55.  Go 0.9 miles. (Bi Lo on your left.)  Turn right onto Harrison Bridge Rd.  Go 1.1 miles.  Turn right onto Hunt Club Rd.  Take 1st right onto Fox Trace.

121 Fox Trace is on your left.

 

Garden 5 (E)—Timberock at Hopkins Farm - John and Carol Hopkins — 3717 Fork Shoals Road. 

            From Greenville:  Travel away from Downtown on E. North St./ I-385 toward Columbia.  Continue on I-385 for 13 miles until you reach Exit 29- Georgia Road. This is the next exit after Standing Springs Rd.  Exit right.  Go 4.9 miles to a stoplight at the corner of W. Georgia Road and Fork Shoals Road.  Turn left on Fork Shoals Road.  Go 3.0 miles.  Timberock at Hopkins Farm is on your left.

 

From Timberock at Hopkins Farm to Garden 6 (F)- Durant Ashmore's Landscape Nursery - 220 McKittrick Bridge Road, Fountain Inn, SC.

Continue south (left) on Fork Shoals Road /SC 146 for 2.3 miles.  Bear slightly right onto McKelvey Rd.  Go 0.3 mile.  Take 1st left onto Cedar Falls Rd. /SC 565.  Go 2.6 miles.  Turn left onto Dunklin Bridge Road / SC 68.  Go 1.5 miles.  Turn left onto McKittrick Bridge Rd.

220 McKittrick Bridge Road is on your right.

 

Garden 6 (F)—Durant Ashmore's Landscape Nursery — 220 McKittrick Bridge Road.

            From Greenville:  Travel away from Downtown on E. North St./ I-385 toward Columbia.

Continue for 14.8 miles to Exit 27-Fairview Road to Simpsonville.  At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto Fairview Road / SC 55.  Go 5.7 miles.  Turn right onto McKelvey Road.  Take the first left onto Hillside Church Road.  Go 0.8 miles on Hillside Church Road; then bear slightly right to stay on Hillside Church Road.  (Do not get on Stockton Rd.)  Go 2 more miles.  Turn right onto McKittrick Bridge Road.  After 1.9 miles, the Durant Ashmore's Landscape Nursery is on the left (0.7 miles past S. Moore Rd.)

The Greenville Council of Garden Clubs also invites you to attend the Garden Tour Patrons Party which will be held the evening of Friday, April 12 at the Kilgore-Lewis House at 6:00 p.m.. Thursday, April 25 , 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.
The city of Greenville 's  annual Arbor Day Celebration will again be held on the grounds of the historic (c.1838) Kilgore-Lewis House.  Third grade students who have participated in the 2013 National Urban Forestry educational program will be our special guests of honor.  Gift trees from the National Arbor Day Foundation will be presented to the poster, essay, poetry, and song contest winners.  The Greenville Council of Garden Clubs, in partnership with the City of Greenville, Greenville County Schools, TreesGreenville, and sponsoring businesses, encourage the protection and planting of trees in our community.


Greenville Council of Garden Clubs - Educational Programs

MARCH 11 - A Design Workshop with Robert Barrett of Barrett's Flowers will be held on March 18, 2013. Bring your problem container and we will help you create a design for it. There will be a $15.00 to $30.00 charge for the flowers depending on the size of the container. Participants are to bring line material, greenery, a needlepoint holder if necessary and the problem container. Flowers and oasis will be provided. Monday 18, 10-12 p.m. - Deadline for registration is Monday, March 11.

APRIL 11 - Wildflower Field Trip to Jones Gap State Park to walk with Tim Lee and observe the wildflowers there...$5.00 charge. Afterward we will all go to lunch in Travelers Rest. 15 maximum. We will depart from the Kilgore-Lewis House at 9:00 a.m. This outing is open to the garden club members due to the limited number. Deadline for registration is April 7.


Greenville Council of Garden Clubs Standard Flower Show


May 7 - Kilgore-Lewis House - 8-5:00 p.m. The GCGC is pleased to present a Standard Flower Show at the Kilgore-Lewis House. Joan Wilson is our Flower Show Chairperson and will be contacting many of our membership to participate. The Show is open to the public from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

May 13 - the GCGC Awards Celebration Luncheon on Monday, May 13 at 11:30am, at Aldersgate Methodist Church. Annual awards will be presented to clubs and members. All garden club members are invited to attend our end of the year luncheon. RSVP to 864-232-3020 or email [email protected]
